COSHH Training in brief: COSHH Training is an online IOSH approved and CPD accredited course from ProCompliance covering what COSHH covers and the substances it applies to. It takes approx. 25 minutes across 4 sections. A 20 question test follows, so learners have their certificate as soon as they pass.
Why this training matters
Hazardous substances are in almost every workplace, from cleaning chemicals to dust and fumes. COSHH requires employers to assess and control the risks they pose.
COSHH Training covers the hazardous substances found at work and how to read COSHH signage. It then explains COSHH risk assessments and the control measures that keep exposure down, as the COSHH Regulations 2002 require. It is for all employees, because substances turn up in far more jobs than people expect.

What COSHH asks of employers
The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (COSHH) require employers to prevent their employees' exposure to substances that can harm health. Where prevention is not reasonably practicable, the exposure has to be adequately controlled.
What counts as a hazardous substance
Chemicals and the products that contain them, such as cleaning products, paints and adhesives. Dusts, including wood, flour and silica dust. Fumes, vapours, mists and gases. Biological agents such as bacteria and other germs. Asbestos, lead and radioactive substances have regulations of their own.
What employers have to do
- Assess the risk from each substance and record the controls it needs. This is the COSHH assessment.
- Prevent exposure where they can, for example by switching to a safer product.
- Control the exposure they cannot prevent, with enclosure, extraction or ventilation and then PPE.
- Keep those controls working, with regular checks, maintenance and testing.
- Make sure exposure stays within the workplace exposure limits HSE publishes in EH40.
- Provide health surveillance where the work calls for it.
- Plan for spills, accidents and emergencies.
- Give staff information, instruction and training on the substances they use and the precautions to take.
