Why this training matters
Not every workplace needs a qualified first aider, but every workplace needs someone responsible for first aid arrangements.
First Aid Appointed Person explains what first aid is and the role of the appointed person under the First-Aid Regulations 1981. It then covers the common types of injury and illness at work. It is for all employees, so anyone can take charge until help arrives.

What first aid law asks of employers
The Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981 require every employer to provide adequate and appropriate first aid equipment, facilities and people. Employees then get immediate help if they get hurt or fall ill at work.
What employers have to do
- Assess their first aid needs, looking at the work, its hazards and the number of people on site.
- Provide a suitably stocked first aid kit.
- Appoint a person to take charge of first aid arrangements, as a minimum.
- Provide trained first aiders where the needs assessment calls for them.
- Tell staff what the arrangements are, including where the kit is and who to contact.
What an appointed person does
An appointed person looks after the first aid kit and facilities, takes charge when someone falls ill or gets hurt, and calls the emergency services when needed. They are not a first aider, and should only give first aid they have trained for.
What you will be able to do
- Understand the role of a First Aid Appointed Person
- Know what to include in the first aid box and what not to include
- Know how to respond to an emergency where first aid is required
- Understand the basics of CPR for emergency use only when no trained first aider is present
